AnnotationThere is a growing body of research into the relationship between psychological state and physiological and physical well-being, and a growing awareness of the effect of psychological factors on wound healing - something not mentioned in older surgical textbooks. This paper reviews recent research and publications, discussing the inter-relationships between psychological factors, the immune system and the endocrine system. Wound healing is regulated by both the immune and endocrine systems. It is suggested that wound healing could therefore be influenced by psychological factors. Chronic wounds can prove difficult to manage, and this is especially true in older people, who are also likely to suffer from some psychological disorders which could in turn affect healing. Whilst this relationship is not yet clear, knowledge of this area of research is increasing. (RH).
