AnnotationThis paper reports the conduct, results and implications of a survey of residential and nursing homes in Liverpool, with particular reference to the prevalence and care of pressure sores. The survey aimed to establish prevalence rates, to collect data on the process of preventing and managing pressure sores, and to look at differences between the two types of home sector in terms of care policy and practice. Recommendations made on the basis of this survey include: development of information systems to report information on risk factors; consideration of processes and outcomes of care by registration and inspection units; referrals to community health professionals and general practitioners (GPs) of those at risk; and an audit of pressure relieving equipment in homes.
