Annotation | The authors provide an overview of counselling skills necessary to consider the needs of people with dementia and the needs of family carers. Two case illustrations demonstrate the core skills/conditions: listening; understanding; empathy; non-judgemental acceptance, or unconditional positive regard (UPR); and genuineness or congruence. Reference is made to points made by the British Association for Counselling (BAC): issues of responsibility, competence, management, and confidentiality in counselling situations. |
