Annotation | 10% of older women live with adult children, but very little is known about whether this form of supported living is satisfactory for both parties. This article reviews research by Judith Healy and Stella Yarrow of the Policy Studies Institute (PSI), 'Family matters: parents living with children in old age', published by the Policy Press, in association with the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF). The idea of 'co-residence' is explored, and its effects on relationships, the lives of carers, and the needs of families. This research, with other research in the field, proves that family care policy must include a greater diversity of services, and an improved level of provision. Reference is made to the `Better Government for Older People' programme (BGOP), which the author of this article hopes will succeed in encouraging services to be strategically planned across all central and local government departments. This research programme also echoes themes in the Centre for Policy on Ageing (CPA) publication, 'The social policy of old age: moving into the 21st century', edited by Miriam Bernard and Judith Phillips. They call for a policy agenda recognising diversity of needs and interdependence of individuals with each other. |
