AnnotationThis report is part of a continuing programme of research which started in 1991 on the quality of care provided for residents of residential care homes and nursing homes. The aim of this study was to provide an insight into the issues involved in access to health services for older people in residential care and nursing homes. Drawing on data from questionnaires and interviews with residents and managers in homes in Cheshire, Leicestershire, West Sussex, and London (Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark), the report examines the access to general practitioners (GPs) for residents of care homes, residents' choice of health care, the extent to which complementary therapies are available and in use, and the policy background to health care issues impacting on residents. The report concludes with recommendations for home managers, GPs, other health care practitioners and inspection units on improving access to health care for residents.
