AnnotationQuestions in the Family Resource Survey (FRS) on limiting long-standing illness, restrictions on capacity for work, and receipt of disability and incapacity benefits were used to identify a sample who were re-interviewed in greater detail about the type and severity of disability and the extra needs and use of services associated. This paper briefly outlines the methods and coverage of the new survey, sets out some early findings about the take up of extra costs benefits, and the prevalence of disability. Although these findings are provisional, the intention is to encourage discussion with a view to refining and improving the methods. (RH).
