Annotation | The aim of this project was to examine the extent and nature of reminiscence activities in residential care homes, nursing homes and day care facilities in Northamptonshire and the London Borough of Waltham Forest. In particular, the project aimed to find out how reminiscence work was defined (enjoyable activity or therapeutic intervention); the views of care staff; and training. Findings from questionnaires and interviews with staff at all levels revealed five types of reminiscence work: formal group; formal individual; informal individual; informal ad hoc; and reminiscence-related activities. Successful outcomes appeared to depend on the integration and embedding in care practice of the five types. Staff enjoyed reminiscence work of all types, however, fragmentation of training and lack of supervision and progression in relation to ongoing reminiscence work resulted in its marginalisation within budgets and training programmes. Local authority-owned residential and nursing homes benefited from sharing of resources and being linked to wider educational and leisure services which supported their reminiscence activities. The report concludes with recommendations for further research. |
