Antipsychotic drugs their use and misuse | Author(s) | Marc Lester, James Warner |
Journal title | Journal of Dementia Care, vol 6, no 1, January/February 1998 |
Pages | pp 25-27 |
Keywords | Drugs ; Drug taking ; Dementia ; Nursing homes ; Care homes ; Standards of provision. |
Annotation | The authors examine the role - if any - for use of antipsychotic drugs in nursing or residential home settings for those with dementia. They give guidance on when the drugs may be effective and useful, and when they should not be used. Patients with Lewy body disease appear to be particularly prone to the side effects of antipsychotics; and low blood pressure, poor mobility, prostate problems and other medical conditions may also be exacerbated by side effects. Whilst these drugs do have a place in modern practice, indiscriminate use is no longer defensible or justified, since behavioural approaches to treatment are usually preferable. |
