AnnotationThe author delivered this paper at the 1997 Graham Lecture, London, 4 November 1997. The paper focuses on the experiences of residents in residential care homes. Older people moving into residential care often experience a loss in their sense of independence and self-worth, with a change in their status to that of living in someone else's home. The author argues for a reappraisal of the structure of residential care, particularly in terms of the form of tenure. Housing has an impact on an individual's identity, and moving into residential care changes the relationship of self to housing. A new model of housing is suggested, in which the individual older person is seen as an owner or tenant, and as living in their own home which others may visit to provide services.
