Annotation | This book aims to update and extend `Critical perspectives on aging: the political and moral economy of growing old (1991)', by applying a political economy perspective to the analysis of problems and issues related to ageing. Topics covered include: the complex interplay of race, class, gender and ageing; the transformation of health and welfare policies for older people; the gendered nature of work and retirement; intergenerational solidarity; and the myths and realities of older people's political power. The majority of the topics are explored within the context of the United States (US), although some subjects are examined in a cross-national perspective, with a particular focus on Canada and the United Kingdom (UK). In addition, the book also looks at the political and moral economy of ageing as a theoretical approach, and discusses recent developments, such as the increased attention to culture. |
