AnnotationThis is one of five papers commissioned from a number of study groups, which looks at issues confronting an ageing society, to inform a nationwide debate on the subject - for younger and older people alike. The Study Group identifies three categories of work for their focus. First, paid work: changes and trends in training and careers, working and business practice, and links between work and households are reviewed. Issues examined include: the future of paid work; changes in population and employment; official statistics; future workforce reductions; attitudes to and distribution of paid work; age discrimination; retirement; age in employment policy; and employment and care. Next, the Group raises the possibility of a greater role for voluntary work - particularly if paid work declines - and how to improve attitudes to voluntary work while at the same time ensuring that it is not seen as replacing or threatening paid work. Finally, the potential for learning and how it might be enhanced is discussed. Distinctions are made between initial, continuing and vocational education, and personal learning. The extent and nature of adult education is reviewed, including the value of intergenerational learning.
