AnnotationThis is one of five papers which have been commissioned from a number of study groups, and looks at issues confronting an ageing society, to inform a nationwide debate on the subject - for younger and older people alike. The Group focuses on three main areas. First, on valuing older people and old age, it puts forward an anti-ageist argument. It introduces 'passive attention', and the age-neutrality principle: that each person is entitled to the respect and protection of the community, and to equal access to opportunities, which does not vary with age or life expectancy. Next, the extent to which older people are integrated with their families, community and wider society is explored. Intergenerational contact between older and younger generations is reasonably high. Expansion of the volunteer sector suggested as having beneficial effects. The final focus is on end of life issues. Topics examined include decision-making by proxy, pre-death support, appropriate communication between doctor and dying patient, living wills, palliative care, euthanasia, assisted suicide, bereavement, and health care rationing. Discussion of these issues is premised on people's freedom to pursue their own views, free from interference.
