AnnotationThis is one of five papers commissioned from a number of study groups, which looks at issues confronting an ageing society, to inform a nationwide debate on the subject - for younger and older people alike. The built environment includes buildings for living in, for work, shopping and leisure, and how we travel and communicate with each other. As it affects all our lives and is relatively permanent, it is important to start thinking urgently about what changes will be needed to ensure that the built environment takes account of an ageing society. Although there may be costs involved, the costs of doing nothing - in terms of health and social care consequences - may also be great. This paper examines the key issues: household growth; local centres and services; transport; housing - living independently or with care; and universal design. Options for change are considered in an integrated way - given that housing, transport and location of services are cross-cutting issues - and will require radical restructuring of policy making and funding. National and local governments, service providers, communities and individuals themselves must consider how far they want and need change.
