Annotation | In the last twenty years, researchers have confirmed the strength and importance of family ties in supporting older people. The four articles presented in this issue of Ageing International review research in the context of four different countries: Canada, France, Norway and the UK. The research highlights three main themes: older people's preferences and choices about the nature of care; older people are not just to be considered as care recipients; and family care has undergone considerable change, brought about by changes in living arrangements.
