Annotation | It was expected that by the end of 1995, Singapore's over 60s would reach 10% of the resident population. This phase of the demographic transition is accentuated by below replacement fertility, increased longevity and prolongevity into frail old age. This paper examines some economic aspects: employment problems (labour and skills shortages); and social security arrangements, a major drawback being that not everyone participates in the Central Provident Fund (CPF) system for future benefits.
