Annotation | The longevity revolution poses both major challenges and opportunities. Five issues regarding population ageing that concern society are identified. First, can we afford the growing number of older people, given the fear express in a 1995 World Bank report of a "looming old-age crisis"? Second, will population ageing bring about stagnation of society and economy? Third, will population ageing promote intergenerational conflicts? Fourth, will the growing numbers of older people gain control of and become the ruling class, a power elite, or a gerontocracy? Finally, to what extent is ageism, and its variations and underpinnings, constraining societal thinking about population ageing? (RH). |
