Annotation | This final report describes a Department of Health (DoH) funded project on the relationship between the general practitioner (GP) and other members of the primary health care team (PHCT). The first section on methods summarises the literature review and the data collection process. The results section presents an analysis of the workload of GPs and nurses, the flow activity within the practice between different professionals (i.e. teamworking and referral patterns), and delegation by GPs. The final two chapters in this section concern patient satisfaction and chronic disease management: that is, the extent to which any differences in outcomes can be related to variations in the organisation of the delivery of primary care. The issues of `continuity' (seeing the same professional on each visit), general satisfaction, and any association between the two are assessed. A final section draws together key findings and their policy implications for skill mixing and delegation, for example the impracticality of delegating complex consultation, fragmentation of care, and de-skilling. |
