AnnotationThis study examined 114 community-resident older people with dementia living at home with the support of a family carer and a matched sample of 114 non-demented older people to determine the factors predictive of institutionalisation. Older people and their carers were interviewed for presence and severity of dementia, characteristics of the older person and the carers, service use, and carers' perceptions of needs and attitudes to care. Subjects were followed up over a 2-year period. Findings revealed that older people with dementia were over eight times more likely to be institutionalised than non-demented older people, adjusting for age and gender. Using Cox's Proportional Hazards Model, factors which predicted institutionalisation amongst older people with dementia were: Mini-Mental State Examination Score (MMSE); carers' perceived problems in relation to the care receivers' physical disabilities; behavioural problem score; and carers' willingness to continue caring. The study confirms the high risk of institutionalisation amongst older people with dementia.
