AnnotationThe International Association of Gerontology saw the preparation of preventive measures for age related diseases as one the main tasks of geriatric medicine in its report to the decade of the United Nations World Assembly on Ageing in 1993. In 1994, the European Region of the World Health Organization (WHO) set a new `Health for all by the year 2000' target, with four dimensions: ensuring equity in health; adding life to years; adding health to life; and adding years to life. This article sets the context for the formation of a British Geriatrics Society (BGS) Special Interest Group in Health Promotion and Preventive Care. In addition to the previously mentioned international initiatives, it also draws on the `Health of the nation' key areas, as the basis for developing a new BGS policy on health promotion and preventive health care.
