Annotation | The growth of consumer demand for long-term care in the US and the need for more complex care is placing increasing demands on the nursing home industry. This chapter focuses on several major public policy issues associated with the industry, which are increasingly difficult to resolve. These include: access to nursing home services when needed; the poor quality of nursing home care; weak regulatory efforts; the high cost of nursing home care and lack of insurance coverage; problematic reimbursement policies; and the current proprietary structure of the industry. These problems are discussed within the context of the current market for long-term care, and followed by a discussion of various options for reform. (OFFPRINT). |
