AnnotationThe quality of care provided in nursing homes in the US has long been a matter of concern for consumers, professionals and policy-makers. This report presents statistics from the On-Line Survey, Certification and Reporting system (OSCAR) for 1991-1995 on nursing homes, staffing, residents' characteristics, and quality deficiencies by state. Methods of data collection (including indications of under-reporting) and inter-survey reliability are highlighted, with narrative findings accompanying each section. This is one of the few reports able to provide data over time on nursing facilities in the US. Although data for the early years of the report does not include some of the facilities, the overall trends are fairly stable, thus providing an opportunity to examine quality issues and deficiency patterns over time.
