AnnotationDementia in people under the age of 65 is relatively rare. Although the symptoms may be similar whatever the person's age, the younger person has different needs and their problems require a different approach. This booklet addresses the special needs of younger persons with dementia, as set out in the Alzheimer's Disease Society's Charter for younger people with dementia: early diagnosis, assessment and referral; access to specialist services; adequate financial support; good employment practice; and education, training and information. Some local studies and surveys of the needs of younger people with dementia are reviewed, as are specific services for this user group. The booklet concludes with strategies for supporting younger persons with dementia, with specific tasks outlined for the Alzheimer's Disease Society, health and social care purchasers and providers, and the Department of Health (DoH) and the NHS Executive.
