AnnotationBoth positive and negative aspects of the expanding market in social care were propounded by the four speakers at this seminar. The first two speakers reported on the purchaser/provider relationship, but from different viewpoints: the problems for private sector providers of home care in developing their relationships with local authority purchasers; in contrast, the wide-ranging purchasing responsibilities of a social services director, and the issues arising. The advantages for disabled people which are expected to flow from implementation of the Community Care (Direct Payments) Act 1996 - if appropriate support is available - were put forward. The last speaker dealt with trends towards greater private and voluntary sector involvement in the nursing home and residential care sector.
