AnnotationRecent research indicates that the main risk factors for coronary heart disease (CHD) among middle-aged persons retain their importance among older people. This study compared current CHD risk factor values in older athletes with mid-life measures and examined the associations between changes in CHD risk factors with ageing, physical training, and physical fitness. Following the initial evaluation, a total of 21 older athletes were followed up after 10 and 20 years. Results showed that several risk factors (smoking, diabetes, obesity) were never present, and the prevalence of other risk factors, such as family history of cardiovascular disease, remained low. Mean systolic and diastolic blood pressure remained low without medication, but diastolic blood pressure measurements had the greatest redistribution between evaluation periods of any risk factors. Mean total cholesterol was lower at 10- and 20-year follow-up, compared with initial evaluation. (AKM).
