Annotation | The decline of the immune response with ageing is widely recognised, and it has been hypothesised that nutritional deficiencies in older age impair immune response. This paper reports on a double-blind, randomised, controlled intervention trial conducted to examine the effect of 3-month supplementation with Vitamin A, zinc, or both on cell-mediated immune response on 178 older people in Italy. Results showed that zinc supplementation improved cell-mediated response, whereas vitamin A had a deleterious effect in this older population. Further research is needed to clarify the clinical significance of these findings. (AKM). |
