Annotation | This paper reflects data obtained through use of a barcode staff time recording system, used in a sample of special dementia care units and traditional units in nursing homes located in New York State. The question addressed was whether or not differences were to be found between the two types of units in terms of the amount of care provided to residents by different categories of care provider. Results suggested that differences are few: among the 10 staff groups represented, "robust" findings occurred with respect only to nurses aides, speech therapists and physical therapists. Moreover, the physical therapy differences were not in the predicted direction, that is, they favoured the traditional units. The findings raise questions as to the "special" nature of special care units, at least insofar as staffing assignments are concerned. |
