AnnotationLittle is known about activity programmes for dementia residents in Alzheimer Special Care Units (SCUs) and how activity participation among dementia residents is related to programme characteristics. Interview data collected in 400 nursing units in 124 nursing homes in the United States (US) showed that SCUs provided activity programmes more tailored to the functional and cognitive abilities of dementia residents than non-SCUs. Findings suggest that activity programmes on non-SCUs should also be tailored to dementia. Developing separate programmes for residents at different cognitive and/or functional levels may facilitate activity participation among dementia residents.
