AnnotationOlder people organising on their own behalf with programmes detailing rights and demands are a relatively recent feature in Britain's political landscape. Whilst the term 'pensioner' may not have broad appeal, 'pensioners' movement' continues to typify the campaigning style and structural characteristics of the most prominent organisations claiming to represent older people's interests. This chapter reviews developments in these organisations over the last fifty years, examining the issues tackled, changes in the context (local or national) in which organisations campaign, how representative they are given older people's diversity, and whether older people are a separate political force. In the hope of inspiring others to undertake research, the author notes that few attempts have been made to record the history of the pensioner movement.
