AnnotationThis chapter explores the experiences of ageing in a multi-racial Britain. It outlines the demographic profile of Britain's ethnic minority populations, and discusses the relevance of this data to policy and practice. It investigates the experience and meaning of ageing for different ethnic groups. There is an evaluation of the relationship between minority ethnic groups and health and social care agencies. The chapter concludes by exploring current theoretical debates about 'race' and ethnicity, and considers their relevance to the experiences of older people from ethnic minorities. The author points to the diversity of minority ethnic groups in Britain, which do not form a homogenous group either in terms of cultural identity or in the disadvantages they face. The challenge for social gerontology is to take on these concerns and to suggest strategies to overcome them.
