Annotation | Until the 1980s, social gerontology, sociology and social policy analysis had largely ignored gender, with even less attention on how ageism combines with sexism to devalue older women. This chapter examines these issues, before outlining the gendered effects of British social policy on ageing since the establishment of the welfare state, focusing on income and health care. Trends and policy issues for the future of older people are highlighted in terms of their gender impact. |
