AnnotationThe emphasis of this chapter is on viewing work and retirement as socially constructed events shaped by a number of competing influences within society. A significant role may be attributed to economic factors - influencing changing patterns of work and retirement - which is analysed with reference to the debate about 'employability' of older workers. The author reviews current trends in the employment of older workers, and summarises literature relating to age discrimination in the workplace. Some broader questions on the social construction of retirement, and points about the future of social policy in the field of work and retirement are considered.
