Annotation | The authors consider changes in policy concerning housing and residential care as responses to the changing nature of household and population change, and the impact of each on living arrangements of people in later life. The concern is with the 'where' rather than the 'who with' - though the authors also demonstrate that care and support are fundamental to whatever form of housing is chosen. The main types of housing are considered in turn: the rented sector; owner occupation; and special accommodation: sheltered housing and residential and nursing homes. The impact of gender and class on living arrangements is also discussed. The question of adaptability of housing in the longer term is discussed, and the author conclude that the types of accommodation and care provided need to reflect the diversity of older people. |
