AnnotationThis chapter aims to indicate the contributions made by the Centre for Policy on Ageing (CPA) to the development of social policy as it affects the lives of older people in Britain. It traces the major shifts which have occurred since the beginnings of the welfare state, the creation of the National Health Service (NHS), and the birth of the CPA under its original name, the National Corporation for the Care of Old People (NCCOP) in 1947. The authors outline and evaluate the dominant social policy issues tackled: institutional accommodation and community-based alternatives, as well as the widening disparities which exist among older people themselves. They also consider the themes taken up in detail by other contributors, with the aim of advancing debates concerning social policy and old age.
