AnnotationThis article outlines the further development of hospice services as envisaged in 'Hospice planning in North Staffordshire', reported in the Journal of the Royal College of Physicians, January 1981. Information presented concerns the Douglas Macmillan Hospice, Stoke-on-Trent, which opened in 1973, and has expanded to include a home care service in 1983, and a day care centre in 1992. Attention is drawn to the increased turnover in the past 20 years, and the discharge arrangements. General practitioners had the opportunity to comment on hospice services available to the community through a questionnaire.
