AnnotationBehavioural problems in the form of four types of agitation are identified in this Israeli study: physically aggressive; physically non-aggressive; verbally aggressive; and verbally non-aggressive. These pose a major challenge to caregivers, and are sometimes indicators of the older person's emotional state. Longitudinal changes in these four sub-types of agitated behaviours were examined for 2 years in 104 participants at five day care centres. Their agitation, cognitive functioning, affect, and medical functioning were all assessed. Although physically non-aggressive, physically aggressive, and verbally aggressive behaviours increased significantly, verbally non-aggressive behaviours did not show significant changes over time. These patterns can be partially explained by the relationship between the different types of agitation and cognitive functioning. Increases in physically non-aggressive behaviours were predicted by greater cognitive impairment at baseline. Increases in verbally and physically aggressive behaviours correlated significantly with greater decline in cognitive functioning and increased depression at baseline. Increases in physical aggression were correlated with greater cognitive impairment at baseline. (RH).
