Annotation | Sub-acute care, as applied to health care in the US, has had various definitions: types of service (rehabilitative or medical); patients who no longer require acute care services; and levels of care. It is asserted to be a less expensive alternative to acute care, but there is little evidence in the literature as to actual costs and public savings associated with it. This chapter looks at the research on its quality and cost effectiveness, and describes state-of-the-art sub-acute providers. Until it is more clearly defined, the usefulness and value for money of sub-acute care will continue to be questioned. (RH). |
