Annotation | Managed care has been a fundamental feature of US health system reform proposals for the Medicare program. The focus on `managed care' is exclusively on health care in this chapter, which reviews the empirical literature related to effectiveness and quality of care within managed health care systems. The authors discuss approaches being developed within managed care plans for integrating the care planning and delivery for those considered at risk from disability or expensive care, and the emerging quality of care measurement systems within the Medicare program.
