Annotation | In this chapter, the authors review the human and animal evidence for the existence of a physiological anorexia of ageing that places older people at increased risk for developing severe weight loss. The role of social and cultural factors in precipitating hunger insecurity in older people is explored. Finally, the increasing evidence that psychological factors - especially depression - may be the most important treatable causes of malnutrition in older people is examined. (RH). |
