Annotation | An international conference was convened by the International Psychogeriatric Association (IPA) in April 1996, Lansdowne, Virginia, to review the current knowledge of behavioural disturbances of dementia and to reach consensus in five areas: nosology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, treatment, and research directions. This special issue contains the papers in summary format, as well as the ensuing discussions, presented at the conference. This final section contains the consensus statement, which states that the behavioural and psychological signs and symptoms of dementia are integral elements of the disease process, and they present severe problems to the patient and all who interacts with the patient. Many of these signs and symptoms are amenable to treatment, which will reduce the suffering, burden, and economic cost. Research needs to address the following: development of cross-culturally applicable methods for assessment of behavioural signs and symptoms of dementia; the relationship of behavioural signs and symptoms with respect to the environments in which they occur; longitudinal evaluation of these signs and symptoms; the clinical and social impact; and treatment methods.
