Annotation | This special issue contains the papers in summary format, as well as the ensuing discussions, presented at an international consensus conference convened by the International Psychogeriatric Association (IPA) in April 1996, Lansdowne, Virginia. The overall aim of the conference was to review the current knowledge of behavioural disturbances of dementia and to reach consensus in five areas: nosology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, treatment, and research directions. The volume is divided into nine sections: aetiology; behavioural disturbances of dementia in the current nomenclature system; theories behind scales and measurements; symptom response to pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment; clinical perspectives; aspects of behavioural disturbances of importance to caregivers; cross-cultural perspectives; future research directions; and the consensus statement. The appendix contains various dementia scales and instruments, including the following: Behavioral Pathology in Alzheimer's Disease Rating Scale (BEHAVE-AD); Brief Agitation Rating Scale (BARS); CERAD; Irritability/Apathy Scale; Manchester and Oxford Universities Scale for the Psychopathological Assessment of Dementia (MOUSEPAD).
