AnnotationInstitutionalised people with Alzheimer's disease (AD) often demonstrate non-functional behaviours such as resistance to washing and dressing. The author gives a brief outline of Swedish researchers' findings, which examine: the influence of environmental, treatment and support settings; motivational levels; quality of life; and cognitive deficits (which are not identical to functional decrements). More research is needed to discover how various factors affect function, and to determine the effectiveness of individualised treatment programmes. (RH).
