AnnotationBecause families of those with Alzheimer's disease (AD) deal with day-to-day care for their relatives, there is a need to focus on the social and behavioural aspects of AD, for which five areas of research are identified. First, assessment of outcomes, by construction of valid, reliable measures that are expected to result from specific services and interventions designed to assist AD patients, other impaired older people, and/or their family caregivers. Second, residential care settings: research should identify the range of potential living environments available to those with AD, and outcomes associated with these alternative residences. Thirdly, more focused research should be conducted on the mechanisms of service delivery and the impact of social and support services for those with AD and their family caregivers. Fourth, worker capability: research is needed on ways to attract, identify, train and retain workers who are capable of providing safe, high quality care for those with AD in the full range of residential settings. Finally, research is needed on ethical issues related to the care of mentally impaired adults. (RH).
