Annotation | Disturbances in sleep activity rhythm are prominent and disabling symptoms in Alzheimer's disease (AD). These disturbances are hypothesised by many investigators to reflect the effects of AD-related neurological damage on circadian rhythms. A number of possible programmes of research that deal with sleep-related problems in AD patients carry the potential to significantly diminish these problems for both patients and caregivers. Approaches to treatment discussed are: sleep hygiene programmes; light exposure; maximised daytime physical activity; heating; minimised daytime napping; and restricted time in bed. The author also discusses barriers to research implementation and resources needed for the rapid advance of research. To be most successful, research needs to consider caregivers and their needs in both home and institutional environments. Priority should be given to testing interventions that are low-cost and easy to implement, and for which caregivers can be adequately trained. Effective recruitment strategies, collaboration among providers and researchers, and support mechanisms will help ensure that research efforts will have a true impact on AD management. (RH). |
