Author(s)Louis Burgio
Journal titleInternational Psychogeriatrics, vol 8, supplement 1, 1996
Pagespp 45-52
KeywordsDementia ; Behaviour disorders ; Methodology ; United States of America.
AnnotationMost patients with dementia of the Alzheimer type (DAT) display behavioural disturbances of varying degrees of severity, which include both behavioural excesses and deficits. The author summarises characteristics of behavioural approaches, and outlines some of the main scientific problems including: the role of the environment; outcome measures for studying behaviour; a call for clinical trials research; necessity of a systems approach; and ethical considerations and the acceptability of behavioural approaches. All aspects of research into behavioural approaches are at an early stage, though there are sufficient data to justify submitting these approaches to clinical trials. (RH).
