Annotation | Behavioural disturbances are common in dementia and constitute a major management challenge. They are the principal sources of distress for caregivers, incapacitate many dementia patients, and often lead to institutionalisation. Drugs are available for the treatment of behavioural abnormalities in dementia, but little research has been done to find the most efficacious agents or to determine long-term side-effects. Many types of behavioural disturbances occurring in the course of Alzheimer's disease (AD) are not amenable to pharmacotherapy, and may be treated effectively with non-pharmacological treatment strategies. Clinical research should focus on the remediable behavioural disturbances of dementia, and should include behavioural techniques from other fields. (RH). |
