Annotation | The major points emerging from an open forum at the meeting on which this supplement of International Psychogeriatrics is based are presented. The first question asked was: What interventions do we have enough information about to proceed to an adequately powered clinical trial? Conversely, what interventions should be held for additional data before proceeding to a definitive clinical trial? Secondly: Are there outcome measures that are well agreed upon for use in clinical trials? What kind of instrumentation needs to be developed? What instruments need additional data before use in trials? Thirdly: What are appropriate designs for clinical trials of behavioural interventions? Are the designs used in drug trials appropriate and adaptable? Lastly: What are the barriers, administrative and otherwise? What resources are needed before proceeding to clinical trials? The general conclusion is that methods and interventions needed are those that will buy time for patients and their families, and extend living arrangement stability without a major loss of quality of life for the patient, caregivers, and family.
