Annotation | The aim of this doctoral thesis was to examine the natural history of different types of dementia in a very old population. Five studies were performed using data from the Kungsholmen project, a population-based study on ageing and dementia in Stockholm, Sweden that includes subjects aged 75 years and over. Both prevalent and incident dementia cases, as well as cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses were used. The results supported the hypothesis that the onset of dementia is variable. Shorter survival was related to male gender, advanced age, low education, comorbidity and functional disability at baseline. Accelerated cognitive decline was predicted by higher initial cognitive functioning, greater functional disability, and having Alzheimer's disease. Different dementia types were found to have similar survival rates but different prognostic predictors. |
