AnnotationThe aims of this study of 17 residential care homes were to identify and test a number of possible measures of quality of care in residential homes. The measures included commonly-used instruments, less well known validated instruments and some devised specifically for the study. A total of 309 residents were interviewed, 264 members of staff completed an anonymous survey, and 228 relatives responded to a postal questionnaire. After an introduction to the study, the characteristics of the residents, including the level of depression, medication and responses to health needs, are described, and the policies and procedures of the homes are examined. The following sections describes the views of managers, staff, residents and visitors regarding occupation for residents, the physical environment in the homes, the staff and staffing levels. The final chapters examines a selection of criteria of quality, and describes the cost or providing care in each home and discusses issues surrounding cost and quality of care.
