AnnotationThis research examined the housing needs of older people in two minority ethnic communities in West London: Asian older people in Hillingdon; and Armenian older people in Ealing and Hounslow. The aim of the research was to highlight and quantify the existing level of housing need; identify perceived barriers to sheltered housing; and act as a catalyst to local authorities, housing associations and service providers in order to improve the representation of the two groups within sheltered housing and to develop schemes in partnership with other agencies, which are culturally specific to the needs of older minority ethnic people. The research demonstrated a lack of knowledge within the Asian community in particular. Barriers to sheltered housing for both groups included lack of awareness of sheltered housing, extended family, and language difficulties. Recommendations for meeting the needs of Asian and Armenian older people are included.
