Annotation | This book critically reviews social policy developments as they have affected older people since the creation of the welfare state. It traces the direction of work undertaken by the Centre for Policy on Ageing (CPA) since its inception as the National Corporation for the Care of Old People (NCCOP) in 1947. The book is divided into three parts. The chapters in Part 1 seek to document the traditional areas of social policy as they have affected the lives of older people: health and social welfare; education; living arrangements; changing patterns of work and retirement; financial security; and geriatric medicine and social work. Part 2 concentrates on themes and issues which have come to prominence since the 1980s: informal care; gender issues; ethnicity; pensioners' organisations and action; advocacy and empowerment; sexuality; and health care rationing and euthanasia. Part 3 offers perspectives on how policy might develop in the 21st century: the political, dealing with inequalities; and the role of baby boomer generation as consumers of health and welfare. Each contribution is prefaced with a quotation from a previous CPA publication. An appendix gives a chronological listing of all NCCOP and CPA publications and reports. |
